Floor designators

A floor designator is commonly appeared on the elevators for disabled in Hong Kong, China. They usually made with stainless steel.

Floor designators is a set of Tactile and Braille signages installed on the both side of the elevator's outside door jambs which following the floor numbering scheme. They are especially common in the United States, and few countries in Europe and Asia.

Usually the signages have a black background with white tactile and braille or just plain (or sometimes colored) stainless steel with tactile and braille.

Standard requirement

United States' ADA

“	407 Elevators 407.2 Elevator Landing Requirements. Elevator landings shall comply with 407.2. 407.2.3 Hoistway Signs. Signs at elevator hoistways shall comply with 407.2.3. 407.2.3.1 Floor Designation. Floor designations complying with 703.2 and 703.4.1 shall be provided on both jambs of elevator hoistway entrances. Floor designations shall be provided in both tactile characters and braille. Tactile characters shall be 2 inches (51 mm) high minimum. A tactile star shall be provided on both jambs at the main entry level. 407.2.3.2 Car Designations. Destination-oriented elevators shall provide tactile car identification complying with 703.2 on both jambs of the hoistway immediately below the floor designation. Car designations shall be provided in both tactile characters and braille. Tactile characters shall be 2 inches (51 mm) high minimum.	”

Hong Kong's BFA 2008

“	Division 19 --- LIFTS Lift provides means of vertical transportation to any user of the building to move from one floor to another. INDICATION AND NOTIFICATION FOR LIFTS COMPLYING WITH DIVISION 19 The requirements for indication and notification to be provided in respect of accessible lifts are set out in paragraphs 81 to 83. MANDATORY SECTION Obligatory Design Requirements 81. Indication and Notification for Accessible Lifts An illuminated visual indicator and an audible signal shall be provided at the lift entrance to indicate the arrival of the lift car and its direction of travel. The audible signal shall sound once for UP direction and twice for DOWN direction, and shall be activated before the arrival of the lift. The audible signal can be broadcasted from a device in the lift car as an alternative provided it can be heard from the lift lobby. Tactile and Braille floor designations shall be provided on the jambs on both sides of each lift entrance, by means of Arabic numerals, minimum 60 mm high, raised 1 mm, and at 1200 mm above the finished floor level.	”
