Rescuing people trapped in elevators must be done only by authorized people, such as legally registered elevator mechanics, as unauthorized actions may result in injuries, deaths, and damage to elevators.

Steps[]

1. Elevator mechanics should use the intercom to talk to the trapped people, asking the number of people inside and advising them to keep calm and not touch the car doors.

2. To prevent electric shock, turn of power to the affected elevator.

3. Proceed with the rescue operation by opening the landing door with the key at the floor where the elevator has stopped.

4. If the elevator car is located at a level of more than ± 600mm to the nearest landing floor, do not release the passengers. If the elevator car is not level to safely bring the passengers out, sometimes it is advised to open the door approximately only about 200mm to allow fresh air or light into the car, enabling the passengers to feel more comfortable while waiting for the elevator mechanics to arrive.

Rescue works should be done by only authorized mechanics, as such rescue works can pose a danger for the trapped passengers to fall back into the elevator shaft.

ONLY properly trained elevator mechanics should manually bring the elevator to the nearest landing floor level by slowly releasing the brake at the traction machine in the elevator machine room.

Note[]

If the elevator car is located at a level of more than ± 600mm to the nearest landing floor, do not release the passengers. Rescue works should be carried out by authorized people.

Dangers[]

SOMETIMES A FATAL ACCIDENT CAN OCCUR WHEN PASSENGERS COME OUT ON THEIR OWN AND FALL BACK INTO THE SHAFT
