Clip from Understanding Skyscrapers - some old Otis lifts with relays/selectors
April 11, 2009
Here is a clip from a series called "understanding...." that was on the Discovery channel.
The clips are from the program, focusing on the John Hancock Tower in the US. It shows the motor room with the classic otis floor selector and relays.
Would be great to walk around that relay motor room with Dave (see 2:52 onwards). He commented to the camera crew..."I don't know how engrossed you want to get with this...". I would travel all the way from the UK to have an engrossed tour with him! Very interesting to see how the logic of 'which lift responds to which calls' worked without using computers and micro processors.
This was filmed in 1,999. The narrator comments on a building being designed as the "newest, tallest building in the world at 110 floors". This was obviously before the Burj Dubai was in existance! Bet those relay motor rooms have been updated now as well!
